Local college scoreboard: Sept. 12

The 11th-ranked North Georgia College & State University women’s soccer team scored six goals in the first half in an 8-2 win over Carson-Newman College on Wednesday in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Caroline Wallace scored the first goal of the game for North Georgia (6-0), just over 8 minutes into the match. Sophia Matonak, Kayla Croom, Cicely Taliaferro, Kelsey Martin and Mackenzie Robbins all scored for the Lady Saints before the half.

Martin scored her second goal of the game in the 69th minute, and Leanne South finished off the scoring in the 76th minute.

The Saints return to action against Young Harris today in Dahlonega.

Volleyball

The Piedmont College volleyball team defeated Point University 25-9, 25-18, 25-20 on Tuesday in Demorest.

Kaitlin Norman and Jennifer Opper had eight kills apiece for Piedmont (6-2), and Katie Byrd added five kills.

Katheryn Knarr, Ashley Fannon and Xandy Green combined for 34 assists, while defensive specialist Paige Eslinger recorded 17 digs.

Piedmont returns to action against Toccoa Falls College tonight in Demorest.

Golf

Piedmont College women’s golfer Katarina Hodge claimed individual medalist honors at the seventh Annual Piedmont College Fall Invitational at The Orchard Golf & Country Club on Tuesday, carding a 36-hole total of 146, setting the tournament scoring record and the school’s 36-hole record.

The Lady Lions golf team finished fourth out of 10 schools with a score of 649, while the men’s squad finished fifth out of six teams.

On the men’s side, Joe Morris was the Lions’ top finisher with a two-day total of 159 for 16th place out of 32 golfers.
