Local college scoreboard: Sept. 11

Elana Newman and Mika Lopes each scored a goal in the final 10 minutes for Young Harris (4-0) as the women’s soccer team defeated Brevard College 2-0 on Tuesday in Young Harris.

The Mountain Lions outshot Brevard 29-3 in the game, and goal keeper Taylor Erickson recorded her second shutout of the season.

Young Harris travels to North Georgia College & State University for their first conference match on Saturday in Dahlonega.

NORTH GEORGIA 1, LENOIR-RHYNE 0: Manuel Hernandez scored the lone goal for the Saints in a victory over Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday in Dahlonega.

North Georgia outshot Lenoir-Rhyne 21-8 in the game. North Georgia faces Young Harris on Saturday in Dahlonega.

YOUNG HARRIS CRACKS TOP 10: The Young Harris College men’s soccer team has cracked the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II National Top-25 poll for the first time in the program’s history.

The Mountain Lions enter the poll at No. 18 after picking up wins against Florida Southern College (3-1) and then-No. 17 Rollins College (2-1) last weekend in Pensacola, Fla. The win over Rollins was the second over a ranked opponent this season by Young Harris.

Young Harris (4-0-0) will open conference play against North Georgia College & State University on Saturday in Dahlonega.

NORTH GEORGIA RANKED 11TH: The North Georgia College & State University women’s soccer team jumped up nine spots to 11th in the most recent National Soccer Coaches of America Assocation (NSCAA)/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Women’s National Poll after winning three matches last week, including two shutout wins.

Joining NGCSU in the poll are Peach Belt Conference rivals Columbus State in fourth and Armstrong Atlantic State in 24th. The Saints are currently ranked second in the Southeast Region behind Columbus State.

NGCSU travels to Carson-Newman College today in Jefferson City, Tenn.
