Braselton to get final draft of Town Green design today

POSTED: September 9, 2012 11:40 p.m.

The final draft of the Town Green design is to be presented at today’s meeting of the Braselton Town Council.

The Braselton mayor and council will meet at 7 p.m. in the courtroom of the Police & Municipal Court Facility at 5040 Ga. 53.

Braselton enlisted the planning and landscape architectural firm of jB+a and Mulkey Engineers and Consultants to collaborate on the design for the Town Green. Public comment on what people want to see and do in the town green was received in meetings and from a website survey.

While the Suwanee Town Center Park is often pointed to as a model of what Braselton’s Town Green could be, feedback was obtained to get better insight into what the Braselton community desired for its space in front of the Braselton Brothers Store.

Suwanee Town Center Park, with its interactive water fountain, amphitheater and nearby retail shopping district, was designed by jB+a.

Steve Provost of jB+a facilitated discussion with the Downtown Development Authority, stakeholders and others attending a July 12 meeting at the start of the design talks. He said engaging the community as much as possible in the process would result in a Town Green which would likely better engage people to use the facility, which should be a focal point for the town.

Some of the goals for the town green include serving as a central gathering point for festivals, small group as well as large group meetings.

It should also be a place where Braselton can do business. Concerns about parking, access and loading and unloading convenience were expressed by business owners and operators.

Vehicular and pedestrian access to the Town Green and to existing and future businesses present one of the challenges for designers.

The issue of the small size of the Town Green was somewhat addressed with the donation of a parcel of land by Braselton Ventures LLC, which gave the Braselton Brothers Store to the town in 2009.

The store will be revitalized and bids are out for that project.
