Seven Hall County high schools and two other area schools, will be among the cross country teams converging at 4 p.m. Tuesday for the West Hall Invitational cross country meet in Oakwood.
North Hall, Johnson, Chestatee, Lakeview Academy, White County, Buford, Riverside Military, West Hall and East Hall will all have teams at the annual event.
North Hall won the top team spot in the boys race last season and South Forsyth won for the girls.
Individually, North Hall’s Brandon Lawson and Luis Gonzalez finished 1-2 in the boys race. Both graduated after last season, but the Trojans look solid yet again, having won the 40-team Clara Bowl event Saturday.
For the girls, West Hall’s Taylor Long led the way, followed by Jessie Dotson and Victoria Rogers. Long and Rogers are both back for their senior seasons.
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Flowery Branch and Gainesville both begin the eight-game Region 8-AAAAA schedule Friday. The Falcons (0-2) travel to Athens to play Cedar Shoals and the Red Elephants (1-1) visit Winder-Barrow in Winder. Neither opponent finished with a winning record last season, but the Jaguars (2-0) won’t be an easy test, having finished 5-5 last season and coming off a win over a talented Elbert County team last week.
Winder-Barrow is still searching for its first win since 2009.
Other intriguing games include Jefferson (1-1) traveling to North Hall (2-0) in what could be the Trojans toughest test of the season so far. And Riverside Military (0-1) travels to Milledgeville to play Georgia Military (2-0) in what will be the resumption of the Military Bowl, last played in 1999.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: The annual North Fall Classic softball tournament, which will include local teams Flowery Branch, Banks County, Jefferson and hosts North Hall, will be played Friday and Saturday in Gainesville.
ATLANTA BRAVES: The Braves (81-60), winners of five straight games entering the week, travel to Milwaukee for a series against the Brewers. Game 1 at 8:10 tonight at Miller Park features Braves southpaw Mike Minor (8-10, 4.58 ERA) against Milwaukee’s Wily Peralta (1-0, 5.14 ERA). The game can be seen on SportSouth.
