Gainesville's Kendrick Harris scores seven touchdowns, named Player of the Week

POSTED: October 28, 2007 5:07 a.m.
GAINESVILLE Gainesville High tailback Kendrick Harris is almost speechless regarding his seven-touchdown performance last Friday night at City Park.

The Red Elephants’ running back, who is listed at 5-foot-6, scored on runs of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 17 yards in Gainesville’s (5-3, 1-1 Region 7B-AAA) 77-35 rout of Pickens. Harris also added an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and had two catches for 33 yards.

When probed about his performance last Friday night, one word came to his mind — amazed.

"I didn’t think I was going to be able to hold up that long," Harris added with a smile. "After that fourth (touchdown), I was winded a little bit. But everyone on the sideline kept telling me to keep going, keep going.

"I was so tired after the game, but my joy kicked in and I was fine."

Harris credits his mind set before the game in playing a major role in his performance.

"The way I got ready for the game was a lot different (than other games)," Harris said. "I’m usually real jumpy and ready, but this time I was ready to win again since we had lost those three games. I just wanted to get more concentrated."

Harris added jokingly that he could do one better with eight touchdowns against Johnson.

Harris said he wants to show the Knights (3-4, 1-0 Region 7B-AAA) that last season’s 33-31 loss was a fluke.

"We’re going to win this week," Harris said. "After that North Hall loss, we started splitting apart as a team. We started doing that pointing the finger thing, but there’s nothing like that anymore."

Harris wants to leave Gainesville with one thing embedded in Red Elephants’ minds forever.

"I want to leave (Gainesville) as the best running back ever to come through here," Harris said. "I just want to go to some school for college, it doesn’t even matter.

"I just want to play football again."
