JEFFERSON — On the 50th anniversary of the debut of Memorial Stadium, it would only be fitting the Jefferson Dragons finish in dramatic fashion, beating Jackson County, 28-6.

Members of the first class that played at Memorial Stadium were honored before the game. Jefferson standout Brandon Mosley, currently playing for the NFL’s New York Giants, was in attendance.

The Dragons (1-1) were a little rusty on their first few plays in their opening drive, but Jefferson quarterback Bryant Shirreffs hooked up with Chandler Thompson to keep the first drive alive.

The Dragons decided to put in a little trickery in their offensive scheme with a halfback pass into the end zone to take the 7-0 lead.

The Panthers (1-1) responded with an 80-yard touchdown pass, courtesy of quarterback Kyle Daniels to running back Dustin Scott.

The Dragons were hampered by holding penalties, which did not please Coach T. McFerrin.

“We had 15 holding penalties. We (have) played a whole season and didn’t have that many penalties,” McFerrin said.

Tristen Jackson led the Dragons downfield and they punched it from the 1-yard line. After Chandler Schlutow’s point-after attempt, the Dragons took a 14-6 lead.

After a long drive on offense, Sammy Williams took a handoff from Shirreffs for a short scamper in the end zone. Schlutow’s extra point gave the Dragons a 21-6 lead.

After a drought on scores from both teams, Shirreffs passed for a touchdown to Trent Sorrells in the fourth quarter for a 28-6 lead.
