Jurrjens, G-Braves top the Tides, 7-1

POSTED: September 2, 2012 11:20 p.m.

The Triple-A Gwinnett Braves snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 7-1 win over the Norfolk Tides on Sunday.

Felix Pie and Terry Tiffee each plated two runs apiece, and starter Jair Jurrjens allowed a run over five innings for the win. The game was called after seven innings due to rain.

Brian Friday got the scoring started for the G-Braves in the third inning. After his one-out double, Friday moved to third base on a wild pitch from Norfolk starting pitcher Zach Petersime.

An RBI groundout by Luis Durango gave Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. Pie followed Durango and blasted a 2-2 pitch from Petersime over the right field wall for his sixth home run of the year, expanding the lead to 2-0.

Meanwhile, Jurrjens had one of his best starts with Gwinnett in recent memory, limiting the Tides to just three hits over five innings. His only blemish was a lead-off home run by Ryan Adams in the fourth inning, a ball that barely cleared the left-center wall. Adams’ fourth homer of the year cut the Gwinnett lead to 2-1.

The game was delayed 34 minutes before the first pitch because of rain, and after three innings of dry baseball, the rains returned in the fourth inning.

But the two teams played on through the raindrops. As the rains got heavier in the seventh inning, the G-Braves’ bats got hot.
