The award, given each year at the 134-year-old Women’s College at Brenau to the student with the highest grade point average in the graduating class, was named for a Brenau alumna from Gainesville who had a distinguished career in journalism and public service.

Uys, the daughter of Rudolph and Estine Uys of Gainesville, is an accounting major, and a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority at the university. She never made less than an A grade in any of her courses during her four years at Brenau.

The Goddard School in Buford is gearing up for its annual fall festival, scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 27. Free activities include a cakewalk, face-painting, and hayrides. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. The celebration will take place outside, weather permitting, and move inside if necessary.

State Farm Insurance Company is trying to highlight the positive aspects of safe teenage driving through event held across the country on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Celebrate My Drive will be giving away 14 new cars to teenagers aging from 15-18, and 14 $100,000 grants to participating high schools. Students can enter daily online to increase their school’s chances of winning and for a chance to win one of the 14 new cars to be given away.
