Around The Home: Sewing scraps can be used for more than just napkins

POSTED: August 29, 2012 1:30 a.m.

If you love to sew as much as I do, then you’ll agree that it’s a great stress breaker.

I’ll admit that I lose track of time when I’m sewing or looking at fabric and patterns. And wouldn’t you agree that it’s hard to pass up a good bargain on fabric when you’re out and about?

There is a way to use your extra fabric and sewing skills to help others.

The new Northeast Georgia Chapter of Quilts for Kids, "where comfort quilts are sewn and donated to children in the hospital or abuse shelters," needs volunteers to sew and help with other duties.

People can make quilts to donate or can request a quilt kit by emailing the address mentioned at the end of this column.

Also, fabric donations are accepted. The 100-percent cotton quilting fabric works best for quilts that are donated to hospitals.

All fabric has to be "new," unused and not clothing or draperies, etc.," according to the organization’s website.

By the way, if you don’t sew or don’t have time right now, you can "adopt" a quilt by making a financial donation.

It’s a great project for a family, group of coworkers, neighbors or friends.

"Our quilts are being received well and are appreciated by the kids and their parents," said Betty Wright, of the local chapter.

A workshop is set for 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 6 at First Baptist Church, on 751 Green St. in the Family Life Center (A/C room). The Oct. 4 gathering is an instructional workshop.

Attendees can bring their sewing machines and/or cutting materials. The group will meet monthly on the first Thursday at First Baptist.

There’s another monthly meeting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second Tuesdays at Hopewell United Methodist Church fellowship hall.

The church is north of downtown Gainesville on 4723 Hopewell Church Road. Participants can bring their lunch to the meeting.

Be sure to view the Downy "Touch of Comfort" video by going to www.quiltsforkids.org and clicking on the "partners" tab.

The organization has chapters in Alabama, Ohio, Texas and Florida and other states throughout the U.S.

For more details on Quilts for Kids and its events, contact Betty Wright at 678-617-9671 or NortheastGAQ4K@gmail.com.
