Organizers postpone Sunday concert at YMCA

POSTED: July 22, 2008 5:00 a.m.

The Christian music concert planned for Sunday evening at the Georgia Mountains YMCA in Gainesville has been postponed, according to event organizers.

The event, sponsored by Big Top Music and 104.7-FM and lasting from 6 p.m. to midnight, was to feature Revive and Mac Powell from Third Day. Some proceeds from the event were to go to the Empty Vessel program to help missions in cyclone-ravaged Myanmar.

Brent Pentenburg, spiritual development coordinator at the YMCA on Howard Road, said presales of tickets had been too low.

Sean Owen, owner of Big Top Music, confirmed that poor ticket sales had been one factor in postponing the show.

"The economy is what really killed the ticket sales," Owen said, blaming the poor economy on a recent trend of dismal ticket sales for concerts.

He explained that a large Christian music festival held in Atlanta each year, which typically draws 15,000 concertgoers each night of the event, drew only 350 per night this year.

Owen said scheduling problems and a family emergency also contributed to the decision to postpone this weekend’s event in Gainesville.

Pentenburg said the $75 price for the tickets may be a little steep for many people.

"I really feel like if it was $20, more people would come," he said. "With the unstable economy, people aren’t as apt to do that anymore."

Both Owen and Pentenburg said efforts are being made to reschedule the event in a few months.

Owen said he is working with Powell’s staff to set up another possible date for the popular Christian artist, who lives in Atlanta.

Pentenburg said he hopes the event will be rescheduled, calling it a "good opportunity and a good way to help out" those affected by the cyclone in Myanmar.

Owen said tickets already purchased would be honored at the rescheduled event, and refunds will be given if the event is canceled.
