This week: A number of area football teams get an early start

The regular season begins for a number of area football teams at 7:30 p.m. Friday — a week before most teams in the state are set to begin.

East Hall travels up to Dawsonville for a very early Region 7-AAA opener against former Region 8-AA North rival Dawson County, West Hall heads to Billy Ellis Memorial Stadium at Johnson High for the annual Battle of Oakwood, and Towns County crosses the border to play rival Hayesville High (N.C.).

All games are rematches from last season. In 2011 the Tigers defeated the Vikings 49-7 in Dawsonville, the Spartans held off the Knights 35-21 at West Hall Stadium and Hayesville took down the Indians 21-6 in Hiawassee.

There is also a scrimmage between Union County and White County at 7 p.m. Thursday in Cleveland, and another at 7:30 p.m. Friday when Lassiter travels to Flowery Branch High.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: It’s a full slate of games this week for the local teams, including two early matchups in Region 8-AAAAA. Gainesville hosts Clarke Central at 5:55 p.m.Tuesday and Flowery Branch travels to Heritage for a 6:30 p.m. start. Wednesday brings a Region 8-A matchup as Lakeview Academy hosts Towns County at 5 p.m. Region 8-AAAA opponents and rivals Chestatee and Lumpkin County meet up at 5:55 p.m. Friday in Dahlonega.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Two of the top teams in the area, West Hall and Gainesville, hosts big tri-matches on Thursday. The Lady Spartans play Pickens and county rival Chestatee, while the Lady Red Elephants go up against county rival Johnson and Area 8-AAAAA opponent Cedar Shoals. Matches start at 5 p.m.The weekend in volleyball comes with tournaments. North Hall will play in the Forsyth challenge Friday and Saturday, while Chestatee travels to Jefferson for the Jefferson Playdate on Saturday.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Four area teams will get the season underway at 8 a.m. Saturday with a trip to the Northeast Georgia Championships at Athens Christian. Lakeview Academy, Habersham Central, Buford and Riverside Military will all travel south for the event.

ATLANTA BRAVES: Atlanta begins a crucial 10-game road trip today in Washington D.C., with three games against the NL East-leading Nationals, four games against the San Francisco Giants and three against the San Diego Padres.Today’s game starts at 7:05 p.m. and can be seen on SportSouth. Braves right-hander Tim Hudson (12-4, 3.59 ERA) will face Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann (9-7, 2.38 ERA).

ATLANTA FALCONS: The Falcons travel to SunLife Stadium in Miami for the third preseason game at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The game can be seen locally on CBS.
