LCKC member Hornsby advances to Olympics B final

POSTED: August 10, 2012 8:55 a.m.

Tim Hornsby, the first member of the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club to make an Olympic team, advanced to the K1 (one-man sprint kayak) 200-meter B final, to be held Saturday morning at the Summer Olympics in London.

With a time of 37.660, Hornsby finished eighth Friday in his semifinal qualifying round after finishing sixth in his heat earlier in the day. The final is set for 4:30 a.m. Eastern time (or 9:30 a.m. London time).

“His heat was a little bit shaky. He needed to make the B Final, so he just tried to do the best he could,” said U.S. Olympic Sprint Coach Shaun Caven on Hornsby’s performance. “He made the B Final, so that’s the key thing for us right now.

“He’s OK that he’s in the B Final. But he would like to perform a little bit better in the B Final, so that’s obviously what he’s focused on now.”

No medals are awarded in the B Final, which is for finishers ranked Nos. 9 through 16 after the semifinals.

Hornsby, 26, is from Atlanta. But he has trained at the Lanier Olympic venue since 1997.
