Prep volleyball: Spell's spikes helped North Hall defend title

POSTED: October 27, 2007 5:05 a.m.

North Hall High volleyball player Katie Spell is accomplishing what she set out to do as a freshman.

Now in her senior season, the Lady Trojans’ standout middle hitter hopes to leave a legacy for the future of the program. Spell wants to finish her career as part of the most productive team in North Hall history.

Last Saturday the Lady Trojans (27-8) swept Flowery Branch in three games to claim their second consecutive Area 7-AAA title.

In the championship game, Spell led the Lady Trojans with 13 kills and 6.5 blocks. In five games during last week’s area tournament, she accumulated 36 kills, 9.5 blocks and four aces and was named tournament MVP.

"I always feel like I can do better," Spell said of her performance. "I was trying to play hard, yet be consistent for the team. I really wanted to do my job on the court. I also wanted to keep the team motivated and pumped up."

Spell said that this year’s title is a bit more meaningful, rather than last year’s.

"It was really special to win our second region title," Spell said. "Us eight seniors have played together for five years now, and it just feels awesome to have won the title."

According to Spell, this season has been her most memorable.

"This year has felt so different since the beginning," Spell said. "As a team, it’s been obvious that we’ve wanted to be more successful than we ever have before."

The senior captain hopes that the Lady Trojans can advance further than last season when they were bumped from the Class AAA North Sectional in the second round.

"I really want to make it all the way," Spell said. "But even if we don’t, I want to make it as far as we can to show everyone how the North Hall volleyball program has improved over the years."

The Lady Trojans will open play in this year’s North sectional at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, when they take on Jordan at Westminster High School.
