Fall practices picking up for local high schools

High school football practices around the area got started last week, and now the rest of the sports can follow suit.
The rest of the fall sports, including softball, volleyball and cross country, can begin practicing on Wednesday.

It will mark the beginning of the pursuit of a sixth consecutive state title for the Buford softball team. The Lady Wolves battled from the loser’s bracket to defeat Pike County for their fifth straight championship in October.

Other teams of note will be the North Hall and Flowery Branch cross country teams, which are among the best in the state each year, and the Gainesville volleyball squad, which was among the final eight teams in the 2011 Class AAA state tournament.

OLYMPICS: The Olympics continue this week in London, including three games for the U.S. men’s basketball team. After disposing of France on Sunday, LeBron James and company will face Tunisia on Tuesday, Nigeria on Thursday and Lithuania on Saturday.

The women will play on the other days, against Angola today, Turkey on Wednesday, and the Czech Republic on Friday.

ATLANTA FALCONS: The Falcons step into their first full week of training camp, which began on Thursday at the team facilities in Flowery Branch.

The team will hold sessions today, Tuesday and Thursday in Flowery Branch; each day’s sessions will be open to the public beginning at 3:30 p.m.

It will also hold the annual Friday Night Lights scrimmage at Peachtree Ridge High in Suwanee, which will be open to the public. The event will begin at 6:45 p.m.

ATLANTA BRAVES: The Braves will try to keep their five-game winning streak going and gain ground on the first-place Washington Nationals as they host the Miami Marlins and Houston Astros for series this week.

The series against the Marlins will begin at 7 tonight at Turner Field in Atlanta and will last through Wednesday.

The Astros come to town at 7:30 Friday night to begin a three-game series.
