Lanierland Civitan will hold a membership meeting Aug. 7 to provide information about the club to prospective members and visitors. Guest speaker will be Marty Owens, known in the Gainesville area for her efforts to assist people with disabilities.

Owens was honored as Gainesville Woman of the Year for her work in helping to organize Challenged Child & Friends after her son, Randy, was left with permanent injuries from a car accident. In addition, she is a co-founder, with Randy, of Our Neighbor Inc., an organization that helps disabled individuals gain independence through housing options and employment.

A more recent product of the association is "Randy and Friends," which seeks to provide added choices for individuals with special challenges. Owens will discuss the development of these organizations as well as the acclaim the group has received in other countries.

Those interested in learning more about Civitan are invited to the gathering, set for 12:30 p.m. at Turnstile Deli in Gainesville.

The primary focus of Civitan International is to provide educational opportunities and assistance for those with developmental disabilities. Some projects include Claxton Fruitcake sales, Civitan Coin and Candy Boxes, a Mule Camp Market booth, annual pecan sales, Salvation Army bell ringers and clergy appreciation activities.

Lanierland Civitan provides additional support with annual contributions to Good News Clinic, Our Neighbor/Randy’s House, Challenged Child & Friends, Eagle Ranch, My Sister’s Place, and the Beulah Rucker Museum.

The Lanierland Civitan club also makes available an annual scholarship for one camper with a disability to attend Civitan’s Camp Big Heart.

Anyone wishing to attend the meeting may call Ed Standera at 770-532-3622 or Betty Griffith at 770-538-2612.
