2 youth injured in Lake Lanier boating accident

Boy, girl hospitalized after watercraft hits inner tube

POSTED: July 6, 2012 11:08 p.m.

Two children are being treated for injuries at an Atlanta hospital following an accident on Lake Lanier between a personal watercraft and an inner tube pulled by a boat.

A boy, age 11, was unconscious after the accident in the Van Pugh Park area and was airlifted in critical condition to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

A 15-year-old girl was treated on the scene, said David Kimbrell, Hall County Fire Services chief and Emergency Management director. She was complaining of numbness and pain in her upper body, Kimbrell said.

Friday night, Atlanta media reports said the boy was listed in critical condition with head injuries. The girl was stable with a broken arm and cuts to her head.

They have not yet been identified by authorities.

Both children were riding on an inner tube being pulled by a pontoon boat when the personal watercraft, operated by a 38-year-old man, “ran over both children,” said Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Melissa Cummings.

Cummings said the man operating the personal watercraft was familiar with the family.

She said alcohol was ruled out as a factor in the incident and that no charges have yet been filed.

“Of course everything will be looked at,” she said.

Officials are expected to continue their investigation today.
