Hall County considers adding turn lane

Commission may reduce lot sizes for minor subdivisions

POSTED: October 27, 2007 5:05 a.m.
Gaines Mill Road might be getting a new turn lane.

The Hall County Board of Commissioners will vote Thursday on a state Department of Transportation agreement to build a new turn lane on the road at its intersection with Ga. 129.

The agreement is a joint project between the DOT, Hall County and the city of Gainesville, Hall County engineer Kevin McInturff said during a work session Monday afternoon.

With the agreement, the county would pay for the turn lane and Gainesville would cover the cost for curb construction.

"The DOT would provide 454 tons of asphalt for the construction of this turn lane" at an approximate cost of $19, 680, McInturff said.

Commissioner Billy Powell said a turn lane has been needed at the intersection for some time.

Commissioners also will vote Thursday on an amendment to the county’s zoning code that would reduce the minimum lot size for minor subdivisions in three agricultural, two residential and vacation cottage zoning districts.

The current minimum lot size for residential one, residential two and vacation cottage zoning districts is 35,000 square feet, or .8 acre, for lots with public water and septic tanks.

For agriculture three and four districts, the minimum lot size is one acre.

The change would lower the minimum lot size to 30,000 square feet, or .68 acres, for the five zoning categories.

A couple of residents have expressed concern that the change would cause overcrowded development in the area.

However, the changes would only apply to existing lots of record with a maximum lot size of two acres as of the date of the ordinance.
