Gainesville State College is once again hosting middle and high school students for its Summer Scholars Institute, beginning this week.

Students spend four weeks, Mondays through Thursdays, studying history, science, math, language arts and exploring career options. Students also take a trip to Six Flags and participate in a job shadow day organized by Junior Achievement.

The program is designed to showcase college life to a population group that is traditionally underrepresented in higher education, according to a news release from the college.

Some 122 students will attend the program this year, with the $850 cost per pupil covered through United Way and other contributions to the Gainesville State College Foundation, specifically designated for the institute. That money covers teacher and student supplies, teacher and staff salaries, two meals per day for 15 days, transportation to and from the college, field trips and uniforms.
