Your Views: Roads sales tax would provide a strong return on our investment

POSTED: June 21, 2012 1:00 a.m.

I am going to vote yes for the T-SPLOST transportation referendum on July 31. After evaluating the pros and cons of the referendum, I am convinced that we have more to gain than to lose by passing this legislation. More important to me, however, is the fact that my grandchildren will be assured of a better quality of life.

I shudder to think what traffic in North Georgia will be like for my 15-year-old grandson and my 8-year-old granddaughter if we do not participate in a regional effort to assure better transportation systems for the future. And we have the opportunity to do it in a manner that will create a return on investment.

Hall County’s favored tax status comes from the fact that we are a regional hub and destination for the Georgia Mountains region. That fact, in addition to our population and road miles, weighed heavily in our favor when the distribution formulas were vetted last year from the roundtable representatives from each county in our region.

This means that for every $1 we pay in taxes, Hall County will receive $1.45 in return. A return on investment and an enhanced transportation system makes it a no-brainer for me.
