Ask the Times: Boat tax helps pay for safety and other lake services

POSTED: June 15, 2012 11:25 p.m.

If you’ve been wondering about something in your community, Ask The Times is your place to get answers. The following questions were submitted by readers and answered through the efforts of our news staff.

I pay Hall County more than $300 per year because I own a fishing boat. What services and benefits do all the boat owners in Hall County receive for this tax?

Hall County charges a tax to any vehicle that requires a tag. Hall County Tax Commissioner Keith Echols said 65 percent of that tax goes to the county’s board of education. The rest is applied to the general fund. The county provides a few services for boat owners.

“We maintain and operate three parks on Lake Lanier that contain boat ramps,” said Nikki Young, spokeswoman for the county. “The 350-foot mega ramp at Laurel Park plays host to national fishing tournaments and other boating events. The boat ramps at Laurel and Clarks Bridge parks are free of charge. River Forks Campground charges a $5 gate fee.”

The county also provides a number of services through law enforcement and emergency responders.

The sheriff’s office and county fire services assist in rescue and recovery of drowning victims. Fire services also responds to emergency medical calls on the water. There also are many boating safety and life jacket education programs.

Taxes also minimally support the Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, though it is largely funded by grants and donations, Young said.

“The only costs to the taxpayers are one officer who spends 48 hours for the entire summer overseeing the Marine Patrol, and the cost of putting gas in the watercrafts,” Young said.

That patrol conducts safety and enforcement patrols and also assists the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with law enforcement and security of bridges and dams on Lake Lanier, Young said.

“The taxes paid by boat owners also fund transportation infrastructure,” Young added. “Hall County Public Works maintains the roads and bridges that boaters use to get to and from the lake.”

Will there be fireworks for July 4?
The American Legion is again planning a fireworks display at Laurel Park in Hall County.

Larry Emmett, chairman of the trustees for the legion, said gates open at 9 a.m. at the park, located at 3100 Old Cleveland Highway in Gainesville, with activities for children as well as a blood drive and food on sale. Each car is $5.

Fireworks will start at dusk, but it’s best to arrive early as the Legion has had to turn cars away in the past after the park was full.

As the holiday nears, look for more details in an edition of Get Out, which comes out Thursdays in The Times, with information about Independence Day celebrations throughout the region.
