The latest trend in home decor isn’t a particular shade of blue or style of hardwood floors. It’s Pinterest.

Pinterest is the ultimate vision board in a web-based format.

It’s like Facebook meets Martha Stewart, meets Vera Wang’s sketchbook, meets any other super creative outlet that makes you think, "Why didn’t I think of that" or "I’ve got to try that."

For the uninformed, Pinterest is an online community where members can "organize and share all the beautiful things (they) find on the Web" on their virtual pinboard.

The "pins," or individual images, can relate to anything under the sun — from fashions for the home and body, to party decorations, or anything else the pinner can think of.

Although blogger Cortney Jenkins says she’s found a lot of inspiration on Pinterest, she’s also been able to use some of the craft projects from her blog, www.faithandhome.blogspot.com, to inspire others as well.

"I’ve received a couple of emails from people who’ve found my projects on Pinterest," said Jenkins, who lives in western North Carolina.

"Projects like the custom bridesmaids dresses from my wedding and the monogram wreath that I made out of coffee filters."

Even First Lady Michelle Obama has gotten in on the Pinterst fun. Although the account is mainly updated by the Obama 2012 campaign staff, you can pick out the first lady’s personal posts because they are signed "MO."

While some of the projects on Pinterest look costly and fancy, many — like Jenkins’ wreath — are made from items you probably already have lying around your house or that you can acquire at minimal cost.

It’s the applications used to bring the items to life that turn the ordinary into extraordinary.

Take for instance the homespun luminaries that pinner Johnnie Lanier created using Mason jars. Lanier shares the craft project on her "Saved By Love Creations" board, which includes items from her website, www.savedbylovecreations.com.

For the project, Lanier used Mod Podge, acrylic paint, water, contact-paper stars and red, white and blue glitter to give her jars a patriotic feel.

"For the light source, I used blue votives I happened to have on hand. You can also use LED candles for a safer, flame free alternative," Lanier said on her blog.

"Lose the patriotic colors and use a shape other than a star to tailor them to your (other) outdoor events."
