Lula man arrested; officials say he fired on sheriff’s deputies

POSTED: July 6, 2008 5:01 a.m.

A Lula man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after firing on Hall County sheriff’s deputies who were responding to a suicide call, according to a report.

Just after 3 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to a report of a person threatening suicide with a firearm in the 6400 block of Narramore Way in Lula.

Upon arrival, and as deputies approached the front and rear of the residence, Tony Whitfield, 46, fired one shot from the rear of the residence before retreating inside, sheriff’s Maj. Jeff Strickland wrote in the report.

Due to the nature of the incident, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was sent to the scene.

While deputies were evacuating neighboring residents, Whitfield surrendered to deputies without further incident.

The request for the SWAT Team was canceled, and no one was injured during the incident.

Whitfield has been arrested and charged with two acts of aggravated assault on a police officer and reckless conduct. He is being held at the Hall County Jail without bond.

Deputies found a 9 mm handgun inside the residence and a shell casing at the rear of the residence where the shot was fired.

Whitfield has a prior history of suicide threats and obstruction, the report stated.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the incident.
