Paiml leads G-Braves to a 4-2 win

POSTED: May 26, 2012 11:02 p.m.

The Triple-A Gwinnett Braves accumulated just six hits in the game, but scored four runs as they defeated the Rochester Red Wings 4-2 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. Greg Paiml had two hits and three RBIs to pace the G-Braves. The reigning International League Pitcher of the Week, Todd Redmond (5-3) was solid in his seven innings of work.

The G-Braves found themselves down 1-0 early after a second inning sacrifice fly by Clete Thomas. Rochester would never lead again in the game as Gwinnett answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Following a lead-off walk to Felix Pie, catcher Jose Yepez singled for his third hit in the last two nights. Both runners came around to score on Paiml's first of two-run scoring hits, a single to right, giving the G-Braves a 2-1 lead.

Rochester knotted the game up, 2-2, in the seventh inning on a Michael Hollimon lead-off home run off Redmond. Hollimon led the offensive attack for Rochester, registering a 3 for 4 game. Sean Burroughs was the only other Rochester hitter to record a multiple-hit game as he went 2 for 3.

Once again, Gwinnett wasted little time with an answer as Paiml and Luis Durango each recorded RBI hits in the bottom half of the inning. Paiml scored Josh Wilson all the way from first base on a double that followed Wilson's two-out walk. Then, Durango drove home the G-Braves’ shortstop on an infield single moments later to push the lead to 4-2.

Redmond allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits in his fourth-straight quality start. He struck out six batters and walked two en route to his team-leading fifth win of the season. Anthony Varvaro worked two scoreless frames to shut the door for Gwinnett, earning his first save of the year. The hard-throwing right-hander surrendered three hits while striking out one and walking two.

With the victory, the Gwinnett Braves (29-20) held their lead for the IL South Division at 2.5 games over Charlotte. The G-Braves will take on Rochester (20-28) for the final time in the regular season on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Jair Jurrjens (2-2, 6.10) will take the mound for Gwinnett against the Red Wings right-hander Jeff Manship (4-1, 3.08) at 2:05 p.m. at Coolray Field.
