Teheran pitches G-Braves to 3-1 win

POSTED: May 22, 2012 5:55 p.m.

ROCHESTER, NY — Julio Teheran pitched seven strong innings, leading the Gwinnett Braves  to a 3-1 win over the Rochester Red Wings  in the finale of the four-game series Tuesday afternoon.

Teheran (4-2) gave up only four hits and one earned run in his seven innings of work. He walked two and struck out three. Anthony Varvaro worked the first two outs of the eighth inning with a hit, a walk and a strikeout. Dusty Hughes completed the eighth by retiring the one batter he faced. Cory Gearrin worked a scoreless ninth, striking out one for his fourth save.

The G-Braves plated two in the top of the first and held on to the lead from there. Luis Durango and Felix Pie led off the game against Rochester starting pitcher Daryl Thompson with back-to-back bunt singles. Stefan Gartrell followed with a single to left to load the bases with no one out. Ernesto Mejia hit into a 5-2-3 double play leaving runners on second and third with two outs, but Christian Marrero delivered a clutch two-out single to right scoring Durango and Pie for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Teheran gave up his only run of the day, a lead-off solo homer to Chris Parmelee.
Gwinnett got that run back in the top of the fourth. Jose Yepez led off with a single to center and, with one out, moved to third on a double by the newest G-Brave, second baseman Lance Zawadzki. Durango followed with a single to right, scoring Yepez from third and extending the lead to 3-1.

The G-Braves had many other opportunities to add to the lead as they collected 12 hits on the day. However, they left nine men on base, and could not push across another run.

Thompson (1-5) took the loss, working 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out one.

Durango paced the Gwinnett 12-hit attack with a 3-for-5 day and one RBI. Pie and Yepez each finished with two hits.
Pedro Florimon was the only Rochester player with a multi-hit game, as he was 2 for 4.

After an off day on Wednesday, the G-Braves (27-19) and Red Wings begin a four-game series at Coolray Field at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. Left-hander Yohan Flande (1-3, 4.46 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Gwinnett, while Rochester (19-26) will counter with right-hander Liam Hendriks (2-0, 1.93 ERA).
