Cancer activist dies

POSTED: July 4, 2008 5:01 a.m.

A Gainesville woman who shared her story of living with terminal cancer died Thursday, 11 months after being diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Kaye Carlton, 67, was profiled in The Times in March. She wanted to publicize her illness in order to encourage others to get screened.

A graduate of Gainesville High School, Carlton spent much of her adult life in North Carolina. She moved back to Gainesville about four years ago and worked as an administrative assistant with Friends of the Parks. Carlton credited the Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center for helping her to cope with the pain of metastatic cancer.

Carlton’s funeral was held Sunday at Central Baptist Church in Gainesville. The family has requested that any memorials be sent to the Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center or the Humane Society of Hall County.
