Maness pitches Brenau softball to 8-0 win at Nationals

Anna Maness (20-9) struck out 11 and allowed just three hits in a six-inning, 80-pitch shutout to lead Brenau University to an 8-0 win over Talladega (Ala.) on Friday at the NAIA softball national championship in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Golden Tigers improved to 2-0 in Pool A with the win and will face top-ranked Concordia (Calif.) at 6 tonight.

Eight different Brenau players recorded a total of 13 hits against Talladega pitcher Jordan Ray (2-9), who allowed six earned runs in six innings of work.

The Golden Tigers were led at the plate by Jenny Shepard, who finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a double. Tiffany Schandera, Lana Lazar and Brooke Bryant each scored twice, and Ellen Black, Taylor Kelley and Bryant added two hits apiece.

Brenau scored once in the first, twice more in the third and three times in the fourth before putting the game away with the run rule one inning early with a pair of runs in the sixth.
