Master gardeners sale starts today

POSTED: April 5, 2012 11:45 p.m.

If sprucing up your outdoor living space is on your "to-do" list, then jump in your car and head on over to the Hall County Spring Plant Expo.

The annual event is sponsored by the Hall County Master Gardeners and the Hall County office of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. It will be held in the agricultural center at 1855 Calvary Church Road in Gainesville from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

"We have quite a few more vendors than we’ve had in the past. This is probably the most diverse field of vendors that we’ve ever had," said Sharon Van de Water, event chairwoman and Hall master gardener.

"There are all kinds of things for the yard, gardening accessories and of course plants."

From antique gardening tools to whimsical critter garden art, if you’ve been searching for it, chances are you’ll find it this weekend. Whether it’s annuals, perennials, flowering plants or green shrubs you are looking for, event organizers have got you covered.

"I think one thing that makes this expo stand out from other events is that it presents an opportunity for gardeners to talk directly to the growers," said Jerry Van de Water, expo volunteer.

"A lot of times, you go to retail places looking for advice and the person was just hired two weeks ago and they don’t know the answers.

"The growers at the expo can tell you what to do to make your plants look their best."

Event organizers have also made provisions for gardeners looking for sometimes hard-to-find native plants and organic gardening accessories.

"As master gardeners, we are very dedicated to doing things the natural way," said Sharon Van de Water.

"We want to encourage organic approaches to gardening and vegetable growing."

Admission for the expo is $2 for adults, but children are admitted for free. Funds raised by the master gardeners during the expo will help fund the volunteer organization’s community service and educational programs throughout the year.

There will be food vendors, children’s activities and lots of door prizes. There will also be a variety of informative seminars throughout the two-day event.
