Georgia Tech notebook: Cox enjoys rare chance

POSTED: October 25, 2007 10:24 a.m.

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech predictably used a committee approach to keep its running game going after losing tailback Tashard Choice to an injury.

The big surprise was that fullback Mike Cox was part of the committee.

Before Saturday, Cox had only one carry for seven yards since 2004, but he showed he can do more than block when he had four carries for 38 yards in a 34-10 win over Auburn.

"It felt good," Cox said. "I haven’t had that kind of feeling in a long time. I’m just pleased I was able to show my ability."

Thefts on the rise for Jackets

Georgia Tech’s defense had only two interceptions through seven games — both by freshman safety Morgan Burnett. Burnett added a third interception Saturday before cornerback Jahi Word-Daniels picked off two passes.

It was the first game this season Tech has intercepted more than one pass. The last time it had three thefts in one game was Sept. 17, 2005 against Connecticut.

"They made big plays out there," said Tech defensive end Darrell Robertson of the defensive backs. "We told them all week ‘You’ve got to come out and make big plays."’

Robertson also made big plays. He had six tackles, including four for losses, and one sack.

"If he can continue this, good things are going to happen for him and us," Gailey said of Robertson.
