Barbara T. King: ‘A legend’ mourned by co-workers

POSTED: March 29, 2012 11:30 p.m.

Renowned businesswoman and former executive president of Primerica Corp. and Citigroup Barbara T. King, 72, died Wednesday.

King’s sharp mind for business and boundless energy led to the creation of ALW Media Management Inc., one of the largest privately owned business satellite TV studios in the U.S. King was also active in her community, focusing on economic education and community service.

David Martin, executive director of the Georgia Council on Economic Education, knew King to be a fair and brilliant businesswoman.

“She was a legend everywhere she went,” Martin said. “I met her at a financial literacy conference at Georgia Public Broadcasting. She wanted to prepare students to make good decisions related to their financial lives.”

Described by Martin as the perfect blend of eloquence and business smarts, King helped create the Gwinnett Student Leadership Team and continued to make contributions to the education field.

“What I liked most about her was how she knew everyone, knew things about them, and made meetings into family gatherings,” said Martin. “She was the kind of person you enjoyed being around.”

King served as a member on several advisory boards through Hall County, including the Georgia State Board of Education, as well as the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services, the Scott Hudgins Art Council and Brenau University’s board of advisers.

Brenau’s David Morrison worked with King on several projects.

“She was a great lady, always very pleasant and warm. She had a ‘let’s get the job done and have a good time with it’ attitude,” Morrison said.

Since her retirement in 2009, three separate scholarship funds were named for her in honor of her dedication to children and adults throughout Georgia.

A celebration of life and funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Cleveland.
