Eggs, bunnies and Cabbage Patch kids welcome Easter season

POSTED: March 29, 2012 12:30 a.m.

What do you get when you mix 28,000 eggs, life-sized Cabbage Patch Kids and hundreds of excited visitors?

The 24th annual Magical Easter Eggstravaganza at Babyland General Hospital, 300 N.O.K. Drive in Cleveland.

Babyland General, home of the chubby-cheeked Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, will be the center of activities Saturday.

“We have had attendance of almost 10,000 over the course of the day (in previous years),” said Margaret McLean, Cabbage Patch director of corporate communications.

The festivities will kickoff with an 8 a.m. breakfast in the hospital’s Magic Crystal Ballroom. The breakfast buffet will be open until 9 a.m., featuring pancakes with a variety of colorful sprinkles, chocolate chips and decorative goodies, McLean said, along with bacon, sausage, fresh fruit and juices and fresh milk from The Creamery.

Reservations are required for the $10 per person pancake buffet.

After getting fueled up for the day, attendees can expect a visit from the Easter Bunny and several Cabbage Patch Kids.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Babyland will offer free tours and arts and crafts. There will also be music, dancing, food, rides, drawings and other kid-friendly activities.

At 11 a.m., the Cabbage Patch Kids characters will head to the downtown Cleveland square for a free community parade featuring floats, a band, clowns and antique cars.

The “Eggstravaganza’s” main attraction — a larger than life Easter egg hunt — will be held on the doll hospital’s front lawn at 2 that afternoon. The free hunt will involve searching for more than 20,000 eggs that have prizes, candy or a small toy.

It will be broken down into separate areas for different age groups. Children up to 3 years old will be in one area, while 4- to 5-year-olds and 6- to 10-year-olds will be in other areas.
