Family escapes house fire

Home damaged off Dawsonville Highway

POSTED: June 24, 2008 5:00 a.m.

A fire caused about $100,000 in damage Thursday morning to a house off Dawsonville Highway, officials said. A woman and three teenage children escaped the fire without injury.

Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said firefighters were called to the two story, 6,000 square-foot house at 2488 Old Fork Road shortly before 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

The home belonged to Thomas Clack, who had already left for the morning, Cagle said. Clack’s wife and children were asleep when people staying in a guest house behind the home spotted heavy smoke and woke them, he said. The occupants were able to get out of the house uninjured, he said.

Firefighters spent about 45 minutes extinguishing the blaze and put out “hot spots” for the next several hours.

The cause of the fire, which started on a back deck and spread up the wall into the attic, remains under investigation. It appears accidental, Cagle said.
