Early voting begins today in the April 3 runoff for the Flowery Branch City Council Post 3 race.

Residents can cast their ballots from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through March 30, according to a legal advertisement from the South Hall city.

All voting on council races, advance or otherwise, takes place at City Hall, 5517 Main St. The runoff voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The runoff is necessary because none of three candidates for the post received more than 50 percent of the votes cast in the March 6 special election.

Fred Richards claimed the most votes, with 122, followed by Jason Covert, who netted 119 votes. Pat Zalewski received 29 votes.

The runoff will be between Richards and Covert.

The April 3 winner will serve out the term started by Kris Yardley on Jan. 1, 2010, and set to end Dec. 31, 2013. Yardley resigned last year to run for the state House of Representatives.

The council has been in a state of turnover for the past couple of years, but once the Post 3 seat is filled, it seems set until November 2013, when the mayor's seat and the Post 3, 4 and 5 seats are up for grabs.
