Oakwood planners consider requests for new businesses

POSTED: June 24, 2008 5:00 a.m.
The Oakwood Planning Commission recommended approval on two annexation requests Monday for a possible commercial property and a child care center.

Frank Turk asked the commission to recommend annexation of a .19-acre tract at 3916 Hilldale Road and rezoning it from Hall County agricultural residential to Oakwood highway business. Turk, who is a member of the city planning commission, recused himself from the vote.

He said the property is a remnant parcel remaining from a previous annexation, and the land will be used for possible future commercial development.

Samuel David Register III asked the commission to recommend annexation of a roughly 3-acre tract at 4016 Winder Highway. Register asked the commission to recommend rezoning the property from Hall County highway business to Oakwood highway business for the purpose of a child development center.

Gene Eisenberg, a real estate representative for Register, said the child care center shouldn’t create problems for surrounding businesses. The commission questioned whether the child care center would pose problems for businesses seeking alcohol licenses, such as the CVS on Winder Highway.

Larry Sparks, Oakwood planning director, said the CVS store is not within the legal parameters barring alcohol sales near schools, but the city has yet to work out the details of alcohol licensing near the proposed children’s center.

Oakwood City Council will take final action on the annexation requests at 7 p.m. on July 14 at Oakwood City Hall, 4035 Walnut Circle.
