Flowery Branch's Drummond commits to Georgia Tech

POSTED: June 24, 2008 5:00 a.m.

Daniel Drummond couldn’t stop smiling Saturday knowing his college football future is now secure. The Flowery Branch rising senior fullback committed to Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson on the spot when offered a scholarship at the Yellow Jackets camp in Atlanta.

"Coach Johnson called me into his office and offered me a scholarship, and I told him Georgia Tech is where I want to play," Drummond said. "I feel like Georgia Tech is the perfect place for me."

Drummond said it’s a positive going to a college that runs the same offense that he is going to play at Flowery Branch as a senior. The Yellow Jackets coaching staff has recruited the two-way athlete to play their ‘B’ back position, which is similar to a fullback, in their option-based offense, says his father Jim Drummond.

"Daniel said ‘it’s Christmas in June,’" his father said of getting offered by the school he visited more than 10 times the past school year. "We’re going to have to buy a bag of lemons to get this grin off his face."

Drummond’s father said they were tipped off by Flowery Branch coach Lee Shaw that Georgia Tech was probably going to offer when they visited for the Yellow Jackets camp. Two of the Yellow Jackets assistant coaches visited Flowery Branch during the spring to watch Drummond practice, but were unable to talk with him face-to-face due to NCAA regulations.

Recruiting interest picked up for Drummond in the past week.

Oklahoma State offered Drummond a scholarship on Wednesday, and he received an offer from Arkansas two hours later. Drummond also held offers from Troy and Marshall.

"He’s a really good athlete and a big kid that moves really well," Shaw said. "He’ll fit in wherever they put him."

Drummond said his verbal commitment to Georgia Tech is solid, and doesn’t plan on entertaining offers from other schools in the coming school year.
