DAHLONEGA — Storyteller and author Carmen Agra Deedy will speak and hold a workshop March 5 at North Georgia College & State University as part of the annual Hoag Lecture Series.

Deedy, who immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1964, has been traveling the world writing and telling stories for more than 20 years.

She moved with her parents soon after the Cuban revolution and grew up in Decatur, where she lives today.

Deedy is well-known for her children's books that appeal to all ages. Her work includes The New York Times bestseller "14 Cows for America" and "The Library Dragon," among others.

Her most recent work, "The Cheshire Cheese Cat," has been called "bewitching" by the New York Times and "a success in every way" by the School Library Journal.

She also has released an audio collection of her stories, "Growing Up Cuban in Decatur, Georgia," which won a Parents' Choice Gold Award and named Best Audiobook-Storytelling by Publishers Weekly.

She has presented her stories on National Public Radio's "Weekend All Things Considered" and performed at the Beyond the Border International Storytelling Festival at Donat's Castle in Wales; the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.; and the Disney Institute in Orlando, Fla.

Deedy will hold a storytelling workshop from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Special Collections Room at the Library Technology Center. As there is limited seating, reservations are required and can be made via 706-864-1540 or gasc@northgeorgia.edu.

Later, Deedy will talk about storytelling and share some of her own stories at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the Health & Natural Sciences Building.

Both events are free and open to the public.
