Hearts and history unite for Valentine’s events

Northeast Georgia History center has 2 events planned

POSTED: February 9, 2012 12:30 a.m.

It’s going to be a busy week at the Northeast Georgia History Center in Gainesville with two big events planned.

Visitors of all ages can find something fun and educational as the center holds its Family Day event, “The Heart of the Matter” from 1-4 p.m. Feb. 12.

The History Center holds Family Day regularly, usually once a month, with different themes each time. February’s theme focuses on matters of the heart, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Visitors can take part in a variety of hands-on activities, interactive exhibits and a Valentine’s Day-themed scavenger hunt at 2 p.m.

Activities will include exercise and heart health sessions at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Other activities include making candy blood, making old-fashioned Valentines and learning an intricate paper cutting design called scherenschnitte, scheduled for 1:15 and 2:30 p.m.

A representative from the Ronnie Green Heart Center of the Northeast Georgia Medical Center will be on hand with an exhibit on heart health.

The History Center also will have a display of vintage Valentines on hand.

Admission to Family Day is free. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes.

Following Family Day, the History Center will hold a forum at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the historic Fort Hollingsworth-White House.

The forum will be presented by Willette Mote and Edith Goodson.

Mote, who retired from the Habersham County School System, has spent a major portion of her retirement as president of Friends of the Fort, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Fort Hollingsworth-White House in Banks County.

Goodson is retired and lives in Banks County. She is a storyteller and stays busy speaking to church groups and other organizations.

Admission is free for members and $3 for nonmembers.

For more information on either event, call the Northeast Georgia History Center at 770-297-5900, or visit online.
