North Hall grad selected to Team Georgia

POSTED: June 20, 2008 5:01 a.m.
North Hall grad Josh Wright is getting all the practice he can before he starts playing college baseball.

Now finished with the Trojans and currently playing summer baseball with the Gainesville A’s, the Shorter College signee has been selected to play for Team Georgia in the 2008 Sunbelt Classic.

“It’s an honor to get to play for Team Georgia,” Wright said. “I didn’t make the team this last year, so everything is going as planned this year.”

Team Georgia consists of 20 players selected by different high school coaches throughout the state. Wright was selected by former Gainesville High coach Wayne Vickery.

The team will travel to the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., to play in the Sunbelt Classic. The classic began in 1977 as an All-Star series between the states of Oklahoma and California. It now includes teams from Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Maryland, Texas and Arizona, and is generally regarded as a national showcase for high school players.

Of the first 180 players who have represented Georgia in the Sunbelt, 80 have gone on to play Division-I baseball, 14 have played Division-II, 60 have played Junior College and 35 have signed professionally. Previous Sunbelt participants include Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Johnny Damon of the New York Yankees and Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman.

Team Georgia has won the championship five times, with the last one coming in 2002. Previous Team Georgia players include J.D. Drew of the Boston Red Sox, Adam Everett of the Minnesota Twins and former Atlanta Brave John Rocker.

Last season, recent Gainesville High grad and UGA signee Robby Hefflinger played for Team Georgia.

Now Wright gets a chance to play among some pretty impressive names that have appeared in the Sunbelt. He even gets a championship ring if Team Georgia wins.

“It’s been my goal to make this team for two years,” Wright said. “It’s a really big tournament.”

Team Georgia opens the Sunbelt at 4 p.m. June 17 against Texas.
