‘Rumors’ have it this show will make you laugh

Neil Simon play marks director's debut at Holly Theater

POSTED: January 12, 2012 1:00 a.m.

Rumors usually have a negative connotation. But when playwright Neil Simon started one, it turned out to be hilarious.

The Holly Theater in Dahlonega will be presenting the play "Rumors" over the next few weekends. Holly artistic director Foy Tootle said they are excited about the premiere.

"We've never performed ‘Rumors' at the Holly, but we fell like it will be a big hit. I chose the play because it got great reviews in the places it has been performed," Tootle said.

"It's a zany comedy of deception and mystery. It involves a humorous bunch of lies, rumor and deception on the part of the characters. Be ready to laugh."

The story is set in the home of a deputy New York City mayor as he and his wife celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. Before the party can begin, things go awry as the deputy mayor has been shot in the earlobe and his wife is missing.

The story unfolds as those in attendance become more and more mysterious and deceptive, and the rumors build.

The Holly Theater's production of "Rumors" will feature several local actors and marks the directorial debut of Daniel Martin, Tootle said.

"We're a community theater, and we're always excited to give local people a chance to shine. That's how community theaters grow" he said. "The more people we can get involved, the better."

Tootle said he expects he will see good work from the director.

"He's done some works with us in the past, but in an acting role. He's done a great job, and we're very excited to have him directing this one," Tootle said.

"Rumors" will open at 8 p.m. Friday. Performances will be held over the next three weekends, with Friday and Saturday showings at 8 p.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday matinees. Tickets are $15.
