Police shoot, kill Buford teen wielding machete

Authorities: Family called to report 15-year-old was threatening them

POSTED: December 20, 2011 9:14 a.m.

Gwinnett County Police shot and killed a male 15-year-old Monday they say charged them in a "full dead sprint" while carrying a machete.

The incident occurred on Windward Gate Lane in a Buford subdivision just over the Hall County line as police came to the aid of family members who felt threatened by the teenager.

Police say they arrived at the Buford home Monday afternoon after someone inside called 911 to report that a 15-year-old family member was threatening to kill them with a machete.

The teenager was identified as Dawntree Ta'Shawn Williams.

According to a news release from Gwinnett Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter, family members locked themselves inside a room in the house to protect themselves from the teenager.

When two officers arrived at approximately 3:30 p.m., they were "immediately confronted" by the teenager, according to the news release.

"Investigators learned from witnesses that the 15-year-old exited the house and charged the officers ‘in a full dead sprint' with the machete in hand," the release from Ritter states.

When officers commanded the teenager to drop the machete, he did not, police said.

"The officers were forced to shoot him as they were presented with this deadly threat," Ritter said.

The teenager was pronounced dead at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

No other injuries were reported, and the teenager was not identified by police Monday.

Gwinnett police say they have been at the home before in response to a runaway juvenile.

"We've been out here a few times," Ritter said.

Monday's incident at the home is still under investigation by the Gwinnett County Police Homicide Unit, Deadly Force Investigation Team and the Office of Professional Standards and Crime Scene Unit.
