Hall OKs 2012-13 school calendar

System will set furlough days later

POSTED: December 12, 2011 11:36 p.m.

Families with children in Hall County Schools can start planning their vacations for next school year.

The Hall County school board approved a calendar for the 2012-2013 school year at Monday's board meeting.

The first day of classes will be Aug. 10; the last, if there's no inclement weather makeup days, would be May 22. Though if severe weather throws a wrench in those plans, students could go until May 31. Dates for winter and spring breaks are also scheduled.

What the new calendar does not include is dates for furloughs - or as the school district refers to them, "reduction days."

Hall County Superintendent Will Schofield said such days likely will be necessary given projected budget woes for the year, but it's too soon to determine how many of them will be scheduled yet.

"There's no way we're going to know how to do that until we get to the budget process," Schofield said at the meeting.

The number of furlough days could be as high as 10. There were eight scheduled for the current school year, Schofield said.

This 2012-2013 calendar was a product of a collaboration between Hall County Schools administration and teachers.

As is the tradition, each schools' Teacher of the Year proposed preferred teacher work days and holidays on behalf of other teachers.

"We got lots of input from them," said Eloise Barron, Hall's assistant superintendent.

Teachers also prioritized which days they'd prefer be used as furlough days, with Election Day, Nov. 6, topping the list and the days before planned Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays coming next in priority.
