POSTED: December 8, 2011 1:25 a.m.

The Northeast Georgia History Center in Gainesville will host a Christmas-themed Family Day Celebration, scheduled to take place Sunday.

The center hosts Family Day’s regularly throughout the year, and director Glen Kyle says the Christmas-themed event is always a big hit.

"This is the fourth year that we’ve done a Christmas-themed Family Day. It has consistently been one of the more popular Family Day events. It’s a great way to get the family into the spirit and enjoy the History Center," Kyle said.

The fun-filled day will be highlighted by a visit from Santa, who will be on hand to take "wishes" and entertain the children. Additionally, pictures can be taken with Santa at no charge from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

At 1:30 p.m., the Enota Show Choir will perform, followed by the Gainesville High School Crimson Chorus’ performance at 2:30 p.m.

Hands-on activities include decorating photo frames for Santa photos, plus making ornaments and decorations. The event will focus more on the traditional crafts of the holiday, according to Kyle.

"If you look back to the pioneer days, Christmas was a one or two day holiday that was very much focused on family. It was about the special meals, the crafts and the traditions," Kyle said.

"What we’re doing is harkening back to a simpler time, when Christmas was more meaningful and less commercialized," he said.

The Northeast Georgia History Center will be showcasing their normal exhibits in addition to a special exhibit of gingerbread Wonders of the World creations by Fair Street YMCA and Gainesville High School ROTC.

"It’s a great way to take advantage of everything that the History Center has to offer," said Kyle.
