Alcohol sales begin Sunday in Gainesville

POSTED: December 6, 2011 10:46 p.m.

Gainesville City Council pulled the cork Tuesday night to open Sunday alcohol sales for city businesses.

This Sunday will be the first chance for shoppers to buy beer and wine from grocery and conveniences stores and liquor from liquor stores on Sundays.

After Gainesville voters approved allowing Sunday sales in the November election, council gave its final approval to revise the city's alcohol ordinance at its meeting Tuesday night.

Council members voted 4-1 in favor of adopting what 69 percent of voters had approved.

Council member George Wangemann, who has consistently opposed Sunday sales, voted against the change.

In a previous statement to The Times, Wangemann said he was voting to represent the 31 percent who opposed the change.

The new ordinance will allow for the sale of alcoholic beverages from 12:30 to 11:30 p.m. Sundays. Sales of beer and wine currently are allowed from 7 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
