Chamber Symphony to play 4 area holiday concerts

POSTED: November 24, 2011 12:20 a.m.

The North Georgia Chamber Symphony of Dahlonega has scheduled a series of four holiday concerts in four different Northeast Georgia cities in early December.

The series begins at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at Bowen Center for the Arts in Dawsonville. Other concerts are set for 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Old Courthouse on the Square in Blairsville; 2:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at Gainesville State College, in the Atrium of the new Academic Building IV; and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at Dahlonega United Methodist Church.

Admission is free, but donations to cover the expenses of the concerts will be accepted.

The program will include a variety of classical and popular selections, including "Polka from Czeck Suite" by Antonin Dvorak; "Dances of Transylvania" by Bela Bartok; and "Concerto in A Major (for Cello)" by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

Holiday music will include "A Christmas Duo" ("The Christmas Waltz" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas"); "Who Can Retell," a Hanukkah folk song arranged by Laurin Smith; and singalong Christmas carols "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "Silent Night." The concert will conclude with "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

The special guest performer will be James Pedersen of New York, playing his beautiful 1694 cello by Italian master Giovanni Battista Rogeri.

At intermission, professional musicians playing with the Chamber Symphony will perform a string quartet.
