Baseball: Dogs land NCAA regional

POSTED: June 6, 2008 5:01 a.m.

ATHENS — Georgia will be home this week as it opens its quest for a sixth trip to the College World Series.

Georgia Tech will be on the road — but it may be a short trip to a familiar setting.

Georgia was one of 16 teams named Sunday to play host to NCAA regionals, beginning Friday. Georgia will welcome two teams to Foley Field for the regional, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if one of the two is Georgia Tech.

Georgia (35-21-1) will play in its ninth NCAA tournament, including its fourth under coach David Perno, who led the Bulldogs to the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship.

"We’re thrilled to have another NCAA regional at Foley Field," Perno said.

"We’ve had some of our most exciting games ever during NCAA regionals here."

The full field of 64 teams and regional pairings will be announced today.

The Atlantic Coast Conference had four teams win regionals: North Carolina, Miami, North Carolina State and Florida State.

Georgia Tech (39-19) had hoped to also play host to a regional.

"We’ve had a great regular season and I hope we’ll be rewarded (today) to keep playing," said Tech coach Danny Hall.

Georgia Tech won two of three regular-season games against Georgia. The Yellow Jackets won at Tech and in Athens, but most recently Georgia beat Tech 3-2 at Turner Field in Atlanta on May 13.

Georgia, the 1990 College World Series champion, also played in Omaha in 1987, 2001, 2004 and 2006.

Georgia is 11-3 while winning three NCAA regionals at Foley Field — 2001, 2004 and 2006.
