POSTED: November 7, 2011 12:18 a.m.

The high school football playoffs begin Friday night, with a number of local teams taking part.

In Class AA, Buford (10-0), the No. 1 seed from Region 6, will host No. 4 Temple (6-4). Region 8 No. 2 Banks County (7-3) will host Adairsville (9-1), and No. 4 Jefferson (8-2) will travel to play No. 1-seed Calhoun (10-0), the Region 7 champion.

In Class AAA, Region 8 champion Gainesville (9-1) is the lone area postseason representative, hosting Region 7 No. 4 Dalton (4-6), which had to forfeit four wins this season as the result of using an ineligible player.

Both local Class AAAA schools will be on the road, with Region 8 No. 3 Flowery Branch (9-1) headed to Johns Creek (9-1) and No. 4 Habersham Central (6-4) traveling to defending state champion and Region 7 top seed Chattahoochee (9-1).

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Georgia (7-2, 5-1 SEC), now the East division leader by virtue of South Carolina’s 44-28 loss to Arkansas on Nov. 5, hosts Auburn (6-3, 4-2) Saturday at Sanford Stadium in Athens. The Bulldogs need a win Saturday and on Nov. 19 at home against Kentucky to seal up the division and a spot in Atlanta for the SEC championship game.

Georgia Tech (7-2, 4-2) hosts Virginia Tech (8-1, 4-1) on Thursday at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta in a big ACC bout. The game can be viewed at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: The Lady Dogs host TCU on Friday at 6 p.m. in their season opener. The men host Wofford at 8 p.m. Friday on CSS.

Georgia Tech hosts Florida A&M at 8 p.m. Friday and the Lady Yellow Jackets host Alabama State at 5:30 p.m.

ATLANTA FALCONS: Atlanta, which defeated the Colts 31-7 yesterday, hosts New Orleans at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Georgia Dome in a crucial NFC South matchup. The Saints also won their game and sit atop the division, half a game ahead of the Falcons. The game can be viewed on Fox.
