Pleasant weather this week is complementing the fall foliage in North Georgia that’s at or near its season peak.

“Beautiful fall color has arrived in northern Georgia, with some higher-elevation parks at or near their peak. These mid-to-late weeks of October will likely be the best time for leaf watching this year,” the state Department of Natural Resources says on its Georgia State Parks website.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the mid-70s until Thursday when the high drops a few degrees and then a cooler period Friday and Saturday when highs will be in the low 60s or upper 50s, said forecaster Alex Gibbs of the Peachtree City weather office.

“This week or later on Saturday and Sunday should be a good time to look at the leaves in the North Georgia mountains,” he said.

Gibbs said there is a slight rain chance overnight Thursday but it will be pretty much clear into Monday, which is Halloween. Lows will range from the 50s to the low 40s by the end of the week.

The colorful landscape is expected to remain until temperatures drop to near freezing for a prolonged period, he said.

According to the DNR, some of the most popular spots for leaf watching are Amicalola Falls State Park in Dawson County, Tallulah Gorge State Park in Habersham and Rabun counties, Unicoi State Park north of Helen in White County and Vogel State Park in Union County.

For more information on the foliage, Georgia State Parks has its Leaf Watch website, www.georgiastateparks.org/leafwatch.
