Nobody is surprised when the smart kid tells them she plans to become a doctor.

On Saturday, Hannah Allen will hail as the 2008 valedictorian of East Hall High School. Allen admits she worked hard for the title, and she plans to work even harder to get her M.D.

“It would make me feel good, you know, helping other people,” Allen said. “I’m willing to do a lot of work to get there, and I think it will pay off in the end.”

Before she begins another long academic journey training to follow her dream to be a doctor, she will take a brief one to indulge her desire for discovery.

This summer, Allen will travel to Italy to tour its ancient cities and countrysides.

“Ever since I was little it’s been my dream to go there,” Allen said. “... So much history’s there.”
Allen is lured to Italy by an interest in its language, but it will not be the last time she crosses the border. Allen has a deep desire to discover other lands, and someday Allen wants to see the Eiffel Tower in France, revisit England and touch the ground her ancestors once walked in Ireland.

When she returns from her 11-day visit to Italy, Allen will start her new academic journey at North Georgia College and State University and later plans to transfer to the University of Georgia to study medicine, languages and theater.

She has considered pursuing an acting career. “I don’t know if it would be as rewarding as being a doctor ... but it’s something I’m willing to try,” Allen said.

But she is not sure if, at the end of her education, she will pursue whatever career she chooses in her homeland.

It is her curiosity that keeps her from making her decision just yet. She does not think she would have a problem living in a different country. “I just want to see the world, see what else is out there, just explore a little bit,” Allen said.
