Hall County raccoon tested positive for rabies

Tests from the Georgia Public Health Lab in Decatur confirmed Tuesday that a raccoon from the Habersham Walk area of West Hall had rabies.

The raccoon came into contact with a domestic dog Monday, according to the Gainesville-Hall County Animal Control Department.

Also, on Oct. 11, a raccoon from the Riverside Drive area of Gainesville tested positive for rabies a day after it came into contact with a feral cat.

A door-to-door canvass in both areas already has alerted residents to the incident, but anyone observing abnormal animal activity is asked to contact the Gainesville-Hall Animal Control Department at (770) 531-6830 or, during nonworking hours, Hall County Dispatch at (770) 536-8812.

Other confirmed reports of rabies in Hall County this year include:

On Sept. 18, a fox tested positive after coming into contact with two domestic dogs on Sept. 14 in the Hillside Drive area of Gainesville.

On Aug. 6, a domestic cat tested positive for rabies after being found Aug. 2 in the Alpine Court area in South Hall County.

On June 28, a raccoon tested positive for rabies after coming into contact with a domestic dog in the Latty Road area in North Hall County.

On June 26, a raccoon tested positive for rabies after coming into contact with a domestic dog June 21 in the Hunnington Mill Drive area in South Hall County.

On March 9, a raccoon tested positive for rabies after coming into contact with a domestic cat March 9 in the Valina Drive area of West Hall County.
