DNR unable to quantify problem with Gainesville's deer population

POSTED: September 19, 2011 1:00 a.m.

I read with enthusiasm the recent article regarding the upcoming effort to thin the deer population within the Gainesville city limits. However, I shook my head in disbelief that unnamed officials from the Department of Natural Resources cannot go so far as to say the deer population in Gainesville is above normal.

Pray tell what would constitute "above normal?" A buck, a doe and four fawns on every doorstep? What kind of political apparatchik would issue such an inept response?

Note to the DNR: The residents of Gainesville have long been well aware of the deer problem here, as well as the coyote problem which has caused the death of many household pets. We would welcome you to the real world as soon as you care to join us.
