FDA regulations would keep supplements off the market

POSTED: September 14, 2011 1:00 a.m.

I am concerned that the FDA needs to be stopped in its recent action to circumvent the congressional 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. The FDA on July 1 has proposed funding some new regulations that will purge some of the most valuable nutritional supplements from the markets.

The FDA proposed to mandate all supplement ingredients introduced or modified since Oct. 15, 1994, when DSHEA became law, would be considered "new dietary ingredients." These then would have to undergo extensive testing for safety and an approval process similar to that required for new drugs.

This will lead to the product, when available, to be much more costly to the benefit of Big Pharma and no benefit for the supplement user.

Please stop the FDA in the disregard for congress in acting as a despotic bureaucracy.

Oct. 1 is the deadline before this goes into effect.
